should i install postgresql branch

the postgresql branch is about 2 years old and 514 commits behind master.
should i still give it a try?

Obviously you will not get all updates that have been made in the past two years. There are at least two discussions on GitHub that talk about bringing that branch up to date, but no commitment on how/when this will be done.
