Steps to extend a module for adding custom fields

Hi,

I have a small requirement in live helper chat, i.e.

The chat option, should have 3 fields (Name, email, phone-number), 1 Department list ,1 chat-text-area box.

When visitor, fills these details, later the operator and visitor can perform chat.

By using "live help embed code", I can get a widget with Name, Department-list and chat-box.

But I want all the fields, which is mentioned, what is the easiest way to achieve this, (even these records should be stored in DB).

Please provide step by step process to achieve.

Please of what module you are talking?
What you mean with "extend a module"?

If you want add field to the chat start or offline form just see the live chat settings and navigate a little.
You will find the possibility to add field at settings, live help configuration, start chat form settings, custom fields.

I am experiencing a similar problem. I would like to create a select type of field (a list items). How do I get to register this kind of field? The custom fields for what I saw only allow these types:

text - is visible to user
hidden - hidden is passed the invisible field from user point of view

Free support of live helper chat is very limited.
If you need customization and you are not able to do by following the documentation (the link you provide) there are Commercial Support.

I Am sorry but I cannot help to customize your chat with personalized field.
Maybe someone can read that post and help you.
