Pidgin and XMPP Assistance Needed...

I tried setting up the chat using Gtalk which gets sent to my Pidgin account, but it did not work.  I got no notifications through Pidgin.  I set up an XMPP account through LiveHelperChat, and then routed it through Pidgin.  I am still not getting any notifications through Pidgin.  I'm pretty sure this is user error.  I tried following the steps for both Gtalk and Pidgin, but I can't download the software (openfire) onto my work computer.  Is there another way?  Or, is there a way to go through Pidgin directly?  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Pidgin is just XMPP client. And for it to work you will need separate XMPP server...
