After clicking Finish installation you should see the following window. (with the prompt to log in)
But I get taken back to the first screen with the permissions (all are green)
what went wrong?

CHMOD to 777 as required
created database to match /site_admin/install/install/1 (dbase is there, but there are no tables yet, correct?)
after filling out /site_admin/install/install/2
I am sent to /site_admin/install/install
instead of /site_admin/install/install/3 as shown in your instructions
No error messages or red boxes

Are you on VPS or dedicated server?
Shared hosting can forbid such script as required some resources.
Seems your server settings can have issue somewhere so live helper chat are unable to finish the installation.

You can try to download again the last version of live helper chat,
be sure all file are being unzipped and uploaded and than try again:
if the issue persist you have a incompatible server settings.

VPS.
Agree it probably is a setting somewhere, or the files given to me by our developer had a problem.
I will try to get the latest version from here.

Yes, the files given to me were corrupt or missing something. It is installed now. Thank you for your patience.
Can the changed files stay at 777 or should any be changed back to 755?

If you have made a new installation and all is working you do not need edits folders permission,
I think. smile as the setup do all necessary cheeks.
