Which files are used by which front end?

Hi all,
I read in documentation how override the design/defaulttheme but I don't understand this:
how I can be sure that a specific tpl is shown in "back office" theme (users/admin panel) and not in "front end" theme (visitors/chat widget)?

p.s. I enabled debug_output but there are too many pages and use cases and I can't check them all for each file
